Following Atticus: Forty-Eight High Peaks, One Little Dog, and an Extraordinary Friendship by Tom Ryan is published by William Morrow. It tells the story of my adventures with Atticus M. Finch, a little dog of some distinction. You can also find our column in the NorthCountry News.

A Great Review of Our Audio Book

A long-time book reviewer from Indiana who calls himself DWD has reviewed the Following Atticus audio book and given it five stars (out of five).  He writes:

"Tom Ryan narrated the book and I am glad that he choose to read it himself rather than hiring a professional reader. Usually, the author-as-narrator is, at best, a mixed bag. In this case, Ryan's New England accent made the story work all the better (I love regional accents!) and he is quite adept at portraying the emotions of the moment in his voice. I cannot imagine how it could have been performed any better by a professional and I recommend the audiobook version over the printed version because of his performance and what it adds."

His entire
review can be found here.  Please feel free to leave comments on his blog post if you enjoy reading it.  (We bloggers love comments!)

I think I will buy the audio book to donate to our local library. So many elders whose sight is bad will love hearing your tale. I hope others do the same.

I also had another opportunity to post your link onto the Well Blog comment section in the NYTimes. She put a post about climbing moutains on there.

Janice, that's a great idea and a good point about some of the elderly. I think I'll donate one to my favorite library as well. Thanks for the idea.

I wholeheartedly agree. I left a similar review on Audible.com. I listened to the book largely while out hiking the whites with my favorite 4-footed friend, Riley. Thanks Tom!

I would ask if Atticus makes any guest appearances speaking on the audiobook version, but I know you have said before he's a dog of few words ;) Bummer! I couldn't resist buying it on audiobook upon reading this, that way puppy Lojack can listen to his favorite story told by his favorite author! I'm about to scoop up a few more copies of the book for Christmas gifts, too. I'm in the middle of reading it for the second time, but couldn't crack the binding on the specially pawtographed version, it's too darn dear to us to not leave in mint condition! Love reading all the rave reviews, very well deserved.

Hi Tom and Atticus,
I am so pleased and relieved that YOU narrated the audio version. Having had the unique opportunity to hear you speak from the heart at that little library in Effingham and then thinking that someone else could come close to matching your heart-style bothered me immensely. No one could tell your story even close to the way you could. You're better than any therapy out there. Thanks.

Depending on what type of camera you have, you can record little sound bytes on the camera (I have a Nikon D2 which does that, the D3s do also)....maybe you could record Atticus when he does something he likes on the trail, like roll or drink or shake....with a picture to match...easier said than done - obviously. Thanks for all that you do....both of you. Daisy, Yogi, Linn.

I can not express enough Tom and Atticus how your story has touched my life. Viper and I (a yourkie-poo) absolutely love how you are with Atticus and all the adventures you have. Wow! you are a compelling and captivating author, and I so desperately want to meet you guys in person, I feel so close to you after reading your book. I'm also going to get the audio book too. I'm up in Canada, Vancouver, BC and I can't get to a book signing, sooooo sad for me...... But I pray all the best for you two-long and happy, healthy fun lives!
Love, Julie and Viper

I just wanted to let you know how mucsh your and Atticus' story touched me. I had spent most of my life feeling aimless and depressed, lonely and misunderstood. After dropping out of college and reaching the lowest part of my life, my most stable support was my schnauzer, Shelly. She inspired me to pick myself and work hard so I can take care of other pets and their owners too. Six years later, not long after I found out I got into Tufts veterinary school, she died of renal failure.

It's amazing how one dog can change your life. I'm glad you both found each other and could enrich each other's lives so profoundly. Thank you for sharing your adventures and I wish you both all the best.

I am listening to your audio book, and had to write to tell you how much I am enjoying it. I have a 45 minute commute to work every day, and I turn on your book and listen, and before I know it, I’m there!

One reviewer wrote that he was glad you read it yourself, and I am too. I listen to a lot of audio books, and like the professional readers, but a story like yours should be told by you, and your accent is great. I visited Portland, Maine once as a teenager (when my Mom decided she needed a break from my Dad), and Vermont as a young adult, now I’m 50, and your voice brings back memories of my travels there. I’ve never been to New Hampshire, but when I was younger I was hooked on John Irving’s books, so I feel like I’ve been there. I’m from South Central PA, but have lived in Maryland for more of my life now than PA. I can also relate to your relationship with your Dad.

Thanks for writing a great story, and sharing your thoughts about life, mountains, dogs, and family. Best wishes on your journey.
