Following Atticus: Forty-Eight High Peaks, One Little Dog, and an Extraordinary Friendship by Tom Ryan is published by William Morrow. It tells the story of my adventures with Atticus M. Finch, a little dog of some distinction. You can also find our column in the NorthCountry News.

Coast Views Magazine Writes About Following Atticus

San Francisco-based Coast Views Magazine has a write-up this month on Following Atticus.  The piece can be read here in its entirety.  I appreciate that the author, Bob Walch, used the full name of both Maxwell Garrison Gillis and Atticus Maxwell Finch.  Love when the media picks up on it.

We have climed the 4000 footers in the winter several decades ago. Currently we are on our second mini schnauzer. The first one died of complications from diabetes. We couldn't to be without a schnauzer. It took six weeks to find a replacement. From an old, infirmed schnauzer to a 10 week old, highly energetic puppy was a true shock - but worth it. Henley trots right along with us when we take our daily long walks. This afternoon I was reading chapter three of the book with - guess who - on my lap and getting very much into the story. Everything you say about Atticus is true for the breed. They are independent, stuborn, nuts, and exceptioanlly loving.

Tom,

Just finished reading your book. It was wonderful and so full of love! I'm a hopeless romantic, so I had to reach for the tissue several times. I was wondering how Paige is doing now? Your last chapter opens the door to a new adventure, and I really hope that she was able to leave the abusive life behind her.

Thanks so much for this book, and looking forward to your next book!

Anyone who loves a dog as much as you do and hiking, has got to be full of love for all things and that came through in your book. We lost our sweet dog in July and the house / the world has seemed so empity without him... My Dad was in the Smoky Mtn Hiking Club before I was born but he took us all over the Mtns. and later after college I became a backpacker for several years. Those were the best times in the world. After reading your book I wished I had had an Atticus with me. It was a wonderful book of love.

I received a signed copy of "Following Atticus" for Christmas as a gift(from White Birch Books). Finished it last night.

When I opened it I thought, "Oh yeah, I saw them on Dogs 101". But there is much more to your story.

While my two schnauzers (Amy & Laura) may never climb a mountain, they and the dogs who came before have made me a better person.

My hat is off to you for the adventures you have had, and for the two great dogs who shared them with you. You escaped the mundane and the pettiness and discovered your true joy. Best of luck to you and Atti.
